Pavers Laying

Pavers LayingIf pavers laying is done correctly then it should require little maintenance and take care of the durability of your pavers. The big question remains as to what is correct paver laying in the construction of an outdoor patio.

It definitely all starts out with a proper plan where you first draw it out on paper and once that is done use pieces of string or chalk to mark the area where you are going to lay the patio pavers. You should pay special attention to flattening the area and allow for good drainage in the case of heavy rain. This is best achieved by letting the pavers slope gently away from the house.

It would be a good idea to start the pavers laying from a fixed object like a wall and use the strings to make sure you are laying the pavers in a straight line. Make sure to leave a gap of at least a couple of millimeters between the pavers to prevent chipping. Also take care that the base is nicely compacted by using a vibrating electric compactor. Do not walk on the compacted base before you have laid the pavers on top of it.

Pavers laying will at on stage require you to cut some corners, of the pavers that is. This will require a diamond cutter or saw which you can easily rent at many hardware stores. In the case you are laying cement pavers a saw is of course not required.

Depending on the size of the area you could just compact your pavers by using a rubber and a wooden plank or an electric plate compactor for larger areas. Once this has been done, fill the gaps between the pavers with fine sand, allowing it to settle and adding extra sand when necessary. When all the gaps are completely filled sweep the pavers so all the sand gets settled between the pavers.

In case your pavers need sealing be sure to check with the manufacturer or supplier to find out which product most fits your needs. Also take care to remove any excess sand before sealing. Sealing is good in preventing stains and providing a general protection for the pavers. Not all pavers require sealing though.

Pavers laying really shouldn’t be that hard of a job providing you take the necessary planning steps before buying the raw materials and executing the job. Just like any job, think before you act!
